What the Color of Your Urine Can Tell You: From Urochrome to Unusual Shades

Have you ever looked in the toilet and wondered whether the color of your urine was normal?

Urine can change color for many ordinary reasons, including how much water you drink, what you eat, medications you take, and how concentrated your urine is.

Most of the time, an unusual shade isn’t a reason to panic.

But sometimes, urine color can provide an early clue that something deserves attention.

The yellow color of urine comes largely from urochrome, a pigment produced as the body breaks down hemoglobin from old red blood cells.

The more concentrated your urine becomes, the darker that pigment tends to appear.

Clear Urine

Completely clear urine often means you’re drinking a large amount of fluid.

Occasionally, that’s perfectly normal.

However, if your urine is consistently crystal clear and you’re also urinating very frequently, you may be drinking more water than your body needs.

Hydration is important, but more isn’t always better.

Pale Yellow

Pale yellow is generally considered a normal, well-hydrated appearance.

It usually means you’re getting enough fluid without your urine becoming excessively diluted.

That doesn’t mean every healthy person should have exactly the same shade.

Urine naturally varies throughout the day depending on activity, food, beverages, and fluid intake.
