Why Do These Small White Stones Appear in the Mouth and Smell So Bad?

Why Do Small White Stones Appear in the Mouth?

Small white or yellowish lumps that appear in the tonsils are often called tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths.

They form when small particles such as food debris, mucus, dead cells, and bacteria become trapped in the natural folds and tiny openings of the tonsils.

Over time, these materials can collect and harden, creating small stone-like formations.

One of the most noticeable symptoms of tonsil stones is bad breath.

This happens because bacteria can grow around the trapped material and produce unpleasant-smelling compounds.

Some people may also feel that something is stuck in their throat, experience an unpleasant taste, have mild throat irritation, or notice small white spots at the back of the mouth.

However, some tonsil stones cause no symptoms at all.
